Congress Is Deciding WIC’s Future. Speak Up Today.

The fiscal year 2027 Agriculture appropriations bill is currently moving through Congress, and WIC funding and rules about how the program is run are up for discussion. This is a critical window to tell your US Representatives exactly why WIC matters to our community.
Our Priorities: Nutrition First’s Messages to Congress
- Fully Fund WIC in FY 2027
As operational costs rise, we need a firm commitment from Congress to fully fund WIC. This program has long enjoyed bipartisan support because it works. We urge lawmakers to work closely with the USDA to ensure that every eligible participant can receive the services they need without delay. - Protect the WIC Food Package
The science-based foundation of the WIC food package is under threat. Current House proposals aim to cut the Cash Value Benefit (CVB) for fruits and vegetables while increasing dairy amounts beyond the expert recommendations of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM). We must reject any riders that undermine the 2024 food package rule. - Make Remote Services Permanent
Modernization is key to access. The waivers that currently allow for remote certifications and flexibilities are set to expire in September 2026. By incorporating the Modern WIC Act into the 2027 Agriculture Appropriations Bill, Congress can permanently reduce barriers for families and help them stay connected to vital services. - Invest in the Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP)
FMNP is a win-win, supporting both WIC families and local American farmers. After two years of significant underfunding at $10 million, we are calling for $20 million in FY 2027 funding. This investment, alongside administrative flexibilities, will ensure that fresh, healthy food remains accessible in our local communities. - Pause the FNS Centralization Plan
Workforce cuts at the USDA have already caused delays in policy support and funding disbursement for Washington WIC. We are deeply concerned that the most recent plan to centralize the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) will lead to a further loss of expertise, more delays, and inefficiencies. Congress must pause this implementation until a full evaluation of its impact on service is completed.
Take Action: Your Voice Matters!
Our children and families cannot wait. We urge you to contact your U.S. Representatives today. Share these priorities and tell them that a strong, fully funded WIC program is essential for a healthy future. Use your voice to ensure that WIC remains a cornerstone of nutrition and support.
